music teacher, botanist, 1874 music supervisor in Middletown Ohio, taught music under his father in Cincinnati schools and 1879 succeeded his father, 1900 he became superintendant of music in public schools of Cincinnati, 1898-1910 residing at Belmont Avenue in Millcreek Youngstown Ohio with office at College Hill in Cincinnati, 1910 he wrote a treatize 'The Voice', 1921 he instituted symphonic concerts by children, while the voice was the only subject taught at the beginning of his 50 year career in public schools, 24.jun.1929 he retired as supervisor, he published 7 music appreciation books, many singing study books and arranged numerous compositions for the use in public schools, 1920-1935 residing at 1520 Aster Place in Cincinnati, he died the same day from mistakenly swallowing dog medicine ; son of music teacher Charles Aiken (New Hampshire, Goffstown 16.mar.1818-4.oct.1882 Cincinnati) and Martha Stanley Merrill (Pennsylvania, Warrenham 21.feb.1832-23.apr.1895 Cincinnati) ; 1889 aged 42 he married Lucy Bakewell Avery (Cincinnati sep.1862-25.nov.1936 Cincinnati) ; they had 3 children
