gymnastics instructor, politician, colonel, bandmaster, 1808-1814 active in the Spanish War of Independence, from 1814 refugee in Paris, 10.jul.1816 he became naturalized French, 1817-1848 founder/director of Ecole Normale de Gymnastique de Joinville-le-Pont in Paris (now Institut National des Sports), 1819-1837 also founder/director of the military and civilian normal gymnase de Grenelle in Paris, 1829 he established the first divisional gym in Montpellier and by 1835 had organized military division gyms in Lyon, Strasbourg, Metz, Arras and Rennes
