1880 aged 27 emigrated to the USA New York City and married the same year, 1883-1886 as musician residing at 212 East 56th Street, 8.dec.1887 as present secretary he was running in the annual election of secretaryship for the next year of the Musical Mutual Protective Union, 12.dec.1887 appointed by the board of directors, 1888 as musician residing at 1237 3rd Avenue, 1891 as clerk, 1892 as professor and 1894 as musician residing at 2862 3rd Avenue, as bandmaster of Cappa's Band he hastely formed a band of over 200 musicians with 18 trombones in the first line for the funeral of Patrick S Gilmore 28.sep.1892 at St Francis Xavier playing the march 'The Last Tribute', there never was such music since Gilmore himself led the way for Sherman's body, 8.dec.1896 he was running for the presidency for the next year of the Musical Mutual Protective Union but received not enough votes from the 700 of the 2500 musician members who voted, 1897-1898 publisher at 85 White Street and editor at 6 4th Avenue in New York while residing in Newbridge New Jersey, 8.dec1898 running again for the secretaryship for the next year of the Musical Mutual Protective Union, 1898-1902 music publisher at 1439 Broadway, 1899 editor and publisher of the Metronome, 28.jun.1899 he was judge in the band tournament where the bands marched the streets from Pennsylvania Avenue to the Hiller building in Tyrone Pennsylvania, 1900 as editor residing with his second wife without his children at 470 West 22nd Street in Manhattan, 1902-1904 music publisher at 51 West 28th Street, 1905 residing at 11 Ridgeview Avenue in White Plains, 24.oct.1905 William H Anstead, a wealthy publisher, accused Mrs Jessie M Graeffe of keeping his 18-year old daughter Maybelle away from him by hypnotism, she has been missing from her fathers home in White Plains since October 13, Mrs Graeffe was arrested and will appear in court for examination, 23.oct.1906 Mary Belle Anstead, daughter of William H Anstead of 2107 5th Avenue, was married to Christopher G Cosmides in the Church of the Ascension but she never lived with him and a week after the marriage returned to her fathers house, 16.aug.1907 on her request the Supreme Court of Justice Truax annulled the marriage on the ground that she was induced to marry by fraud and duress by Cosmides, 1907-1912 he lived most of the time at his summer cottage 201 Union Avenue in Saratoga Springs, 1907 with his son and daughter, 1910 as composer and music publisher residing with wife, 2 children and a servant at 335 West 20th Street in Manhattan, 1915 as publisher residing with wife and 2 children at Blauvelt in Orangetown, 1917-1920 as store department manager residing with wife, 2 children and a butler at 319 West 139th Street in Manhattan, 1927 residing with his daughter at 36 Mariner Street in Buffalo NY where his son also resided, 1930 widowed boarding in Buffalo, 1932 residing with his daughter at 49 Day's Park in Buffalo ; 16.dec.1880 in Manhattan he married Jane S Butler (New York may.1860-), divorced ; daughter who never married Mary (May) Belle (Mabel) (Maybelle) (Manhattan 23.jun.1886-), son James Henry (Manhattan 6.feb.1888-) ; 1898 he married Belle H (Georgia feb.1857-), by 1906 she had adopted his son and daughter from his first marriage
