music critic, 1938 after his father was incarcerated at Buchenwald concentration camp and his mother took her own life he moved to the USA settling in Chicago, 1944 in Chicago he became naturalized American taking the name Arlen, BSc in music from Peabody College of Teachers in Nashville Tennessee, 1955 MA from the University of California Los Angeles, 1961-1981 music news editor, music critic and reviewer for the Los Angeles Times, professor of music at the University of California Los Angeles, California State University Los Angeles, 1968-1975 founder of the music department, chairman and professor of Loyola Marymount University, 1976 professor of music history, 1962-1976 residing at 515 South Barrington Avenue in Los Angeles, 1986 he began composing which was performed publicly only after 2008, he is still living at the age of 99
