composer of hymn tunes, shipwright in His Majesty's Dockyard at Portsmouth Portsea Island, residing at Nile Street in Portsmouth Landport, 1807 residing at Portsea Island, choirmaster at Daniel Street Wesleyan Chapel at Portsea Island, he composed many of his tunes while at work and used to note them down with his carpenter's pencil on a piece of wood, his tune 'Sarah' was first 'pricked' in this way and was long preserved by his friend Mr. Johnson who also helped in a practical manner in the publication of his tunes ; son of William Arnold and Elizabeth 'Betty' Burt (13.nov.1737-) ; brother of Elizabeth (Newchurch 21.feb.1762-), Jane (Newchurch 4.mar.1764-) and William (Newchurch 16.feb.1766- died shortly after birth)
