son of Pedro de Assas del Castillo and Magdalena Ereno Santa Coloma, writer, orientalist and historian of art, architecture and archaeology (and apparently an amateur pianist and composer), 1825-1827 studied law in Burgos and Valladolid and finished it 1836 in Madrid, 1846-1849 taught 'history of spanish architecture' and 1849-1852 'universal history of architecture' at the Ateneo de Madrid, 1852 studied Sanskrit and Celtic at College de France and egyptian antiquities and archeology at the Sorbonne in Paris, he traveled France, Switzerland, Germany and Russia, 1856 he held the first chair of Spanish Sanskrit at Universidad Central de Madrid, 1856 in Madrid he published 'Chronicle of the province of Santander', all his hieroglyphics contained musical notes, from 1861 assistant, archivist, director at Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid
