antiquarian, historian, art collector, 1822 doctor of law from Erlangen University, dedicated himself to the administration of the family estate and to the study of German antiquity, from 1846 dedicated himself to the creation of a museum for German antiquity, 1848 moved to Nurnberg and 1852 founded and directed the Germanisches Museum, 1862 retired to an estate in Kressbronn am Bodensee, he died in Munsterlingen from injuries received from a mob of angry students who mistakenly took him for another 'Francophile' person when he visited the opening ceremony of Strasbourg University
