not a single original composition found by Charles de Avanel, he made many transcriptions for piano of opera arias and folksongs all published in 1870 by Carl Friedrich Peters Leipzig, he was probably employed by C. F. Peters for this project, the New York Herald of 18.apr.1870 reviewed his first series of transcriptions as 'brilliant operatic fantasias, this composer has made more out of the subjects he has selected than any of his contemporaries, there is brilliancy, compactness and finish about them, which must make them popular with every artist and amateur', the New York Herald of 24.jun.1870 reviewed his second series of transcriptions as equally 'brilliant transcriptions', all the more surprising that Charles d'Avenel remained completely unknown and did not publish any other work...
