fiddler, originally a quarryman in Edinburgh and Burdiehouse, as violinist active in Loanhead and Bonnyrigg both near Edinburgh, he played at dance festivals, weddings and at Dalkeith Palace and Stobo Castle, gifted with a natural genius for music he could extemporise variations on favourite tunes 'ad infinitum' ; his son James (1804-1861 Coldstream) was a likewise celebrated fiddler
