hornist, grew up in Fergus county Montana, 1930 residing in San Diego, 1930-1932 studied horn with Arkady Yegudkin at the Eastman School of Music, 1933-1934 studied at San Diego State Teachers College, 1934-1938 at Yale University, studied with Richard Donovan and David Smith, 1937-1939 hornist of the Minneapolis Symphony, assistant leader of the Army Air Forces Band during World War II, 1946-1949 hornist of the City Opera and 1952-1955 of the City Ballet in New York, 1952 co-founder of the New York Woodwind Quintet, 1957-1961 taught at Yale University, 1958-1961 at New York University, 1961-1974 at the University of Wisconsin Madison ; son of farmer John Rumsey Barrows (Maine, Pleasant Grove 13.mar.1864-1930 San Diego) and Leslie Frances Foote (New York 26.aug.1880-31.jan.1974 San Diego) ; he married Taite Georgia Sanford (Mississippi, Como 21.may.1913-11.dec.1995 Como)
