organist, studied with Filippo Traetta and at the American Conservatory of Music Philadelphia, 1824-1832 organist of St James Episcopal Church in Lancaster Pennsylvania first as assistant to his father who was a German immigrant and organist of St James Church, 1850-1880 professor of music in Philadelphia, 1875-1991 organist of Clinton Street Church Philadelphia, managing editor of 'The Musical Clipper', 1849-11.jun.1900 music publisher in Philadelphia, 1905 aged 93 he resided at the Masonic Home 3333 North Broad Street, buried at Greenwood Cemetery ; 1836 he married Charlotte (1812-13.aug.1897 Philadelphia) ; their only son James F Beckel (Philadelphia 1843-13.nov.1890 Philadelphia) was 1870 music teacher in Philadelphia and 1880 companion in the music publishing of his father
