clarinetist, from the age of six studied violin, flute and bassoon with his demanding father in Frankenthal am Rhein, 1811 aged 16 he fled from home and joined the 39me French infantry regiment at Landau as bassoonist and fought in the Peninsular War (1807-1814), then studied composition with Fetis in Douai and with Reicha in Paris, 1817 bandmaster of the 2e Regiment suisse de la garde in Paris, 1823 clarinetist at Theatre du Vaudeville, 1825-1838 at Theatre Italien, 1831 professor of clarinet at the Conservatoire de Paris, 1836 director of the newly founded Gymnase de Musique Militaire in Paris ; son of musician Jacob Beer (d. 23.oct.1824 Frankenthal) and Susanne Niebergall ; brother of Philipp
