jazz guitarist, by 1930 the family had moved to a farm in nearby Chuckatuck, 1935 studied guitar with his father, 1945 composition and jazz theory at the Harnett National Music School in Manhattan, 1950 classical guitar with Sophocles Papas in Washington DC and 1954 with Andres Segovia in Italy, 1961 toured Latin America, discovered the bossa nova in Brazil and introduced it to the USA, 1973 moved to Annapolis, 1973 wrote a guitar method which became widely used ; son of mechanic/farmer Newman Herbert Byrd (Suffolk Holy Neck 12.nov.1901-1.nov.1966 Virginia, Chincoteague) and Mary Lee Holland (Suffolk 12.sep.1901-8.may.1996 Suffolk)
