philantropist, man of letters, author, amateur musician, 6.aug.1740 baptized in Shaftesbury, studied at Wincester College, 1761 BA and 1764 MA from Merton College Oxford, 1765-1767 toured the European continent, 1776 inherited a fortune at the death of his father Henry Benson Earle Esq., he donated large sums of money to Bishop Seth Ward's college in the Close, to St George's Hospital Hyde Park, to Hetheringham's charity for the blind, to the fund for the relief of decayed musicians, to the parishes of the Close, St Edmund, St Thomas and St Martin in Salisbury, to the parishes of Grately Hampshire and North Stoke Somersetshire, to the Bath Agricultural Society and many societies of arts and letters, died at his house in the Close, 30.mar.1796 buried in the parish church of Newton Toney
