Gambaro, Giovanni Battista (Jean Baptiste) 1785-10.mar.1850 (obit) Italy, Genoa - Genoa
clarinetist, 1814 settled in Paris where he was bandmaster of an Italian regiment in the service of France, he joined the music publishing and musical instrument shop of Vincent Gambaro who had founded the firm before 1808 which was known as just 'Gambaro', 1808-1810 as 'Mme Gambaro' and after Giovanni had joined the firm as 'Gambaro ou Jeune', he continued the business but after 1822 mainly as instrument maker and dealer, 1816 he became first clarinetist in the orchestra of Theatre ltalien under the direction of Madame Catalani, 10.nov.1823 at rue Rameau in Paris after the performance of Barbier de Seville he conducted a harmony orchestra playing a serenade to honor the composer Rossini
[at this point Fetis gives erroneously: 1825 he felt the first symptoms of chest problems and died young in the summer of 1828 in Paris]
actually by 1828 he had become conductor of the orchestra of Theatre ltalien which position he held nearly until his death in 1850, Friedrich Berr (1794-1838) had taken his place as first clarinetist with whom he also concertized in duo, he collaborated in composing with oboe player/maker Charles Louis Triebert (1810-1867), 1835-1846 the business of Gambaro, publisher, dealer of 'instrumens de musique militaire', 'editeur et professeur de musique' and 'facteur de pianos et instruments en cuivre' was at 18 rue des Vieux Augustins Paris, 1841 he was named Gambaro Aine because his son had joined the business, 1.feb.1846 he had a trial in court against Adolphe Sax and his bogus patents, he retired to Genoa where he died shortly before 10.mar.1850 because at this date his obituary was published in the Revue et Gazette Musicale Paris, the obituary says he was attached with Theatre Italien for 40 years

[Jeune to, but not Fils of Vincenzo (Vincent) Gambaro (Genoa b1772-?1828 Paris)]
[? related to music editor/publisher Nicolas Antoine Auguste Gambaro (jul.1808-aug.1852 Charleville), 1826 1st prize piano at the Conservatoire National de Paris, 1842 Gambaro (?Nicolas) was piano teacher of Paul Bernard (1827-1879)]

[see also Vincenzo Gambaro because they are often confused]
