studied violin with Leopold Damrosch, was violinist in orchestras, conducted theater orchestras in New York, 1897 engaged as arranger for Carl Fischer New York, 1909 became editor-in-chief of Fischer's publications, also edited Fischer periodicals, 1900 the Metronome and 1904-1929 the Musical Observer, 22.nov.1905-1935 under pseudonym W F Ambrosio arranger for Carl Fischer, apart from his continuous stream of arrangements he also composed thousands of original works, after his death Carl Fischer recycled the pseudonym W F Ambrosio for his arranger Julius S Seredy
