jazz organist, studied piano with his parents who were both amateur pianist, 1946-1949 studied piano and bass at the Hamilton and Ornstein Schools of Music in Philadelphia, 1953 he took up the Hammond B3 organ and soon gained international fame, 2004 he moved with his wife Lola to Phoenix Scottsdale Arizona, US Social Security gives James O Smith (8.dec.1928-8.feb.2005) last residence Carmichael Sacramento California but obituaries say that he died aged 76 at his home in Scottsdale, he was buried at Merion Memorial Park in Bala Cynwyd Philadelphia where his grave reads born 1928 ; he married Edna Joy (1938-2002 buried Bala Cynwyd) ; his wife Lola died a few months after their move to Scottsdale in 2004
