pianist, 24.jul.1831 baptized at St Mark's in Manchester Cheetham, 1838 aged 6 a virtuoso on the piano, violin and concertina, studied privately with Leopold de Meyer in London and with Pleyel, Moscheles, Rubinstein, Dohler, Thalberg and Liszt, 26.aug.1846 he pulled the stops of the organ for Dr. Gauntlet at Mendelssohn's first performance of Elijah at the Birmingham Festival with the composer conducting, 1847 emigrated to the USA New York where he dropped the alias Andrews, 16.nov.1847 debuting in a concert at the Broadway Tabernacle, 1847 the New York Philharmonic Society invited him to play at one of its concerts and thus was formed a connection that lasted until his death, since 1854 as honorary member, 1850 Jenny Lind was fortunate in securing his services at her concerts on her first arrival in the USA, he played with Gottschalk and 1875 with Hans von Bulow in duets for two pianos, he became such a sought-for teacher of piano that he had only time left for giving concerts once a year at the Philhamonic Society, he died at his summer home in Mount Kisco while residing at 125 East 36th Street ; son of composer Richard Hoffman Andrews sr. ; 29.mar.1869 in Manhattan he married Fidelia Marshall Lamson (France, Paris 27.jan.1848-17.apr.1922 Manhattan) ; they had 6 children, the last sculptor Malvina Cornell Hoffman (New York City 15.jun.1885-10.jul.1966 New York City)
