pianist, concert organist, 1870 grew up in Banbury Oxfordshire, received his first music lessons from his mother, 1875 studied organ with Josiah Booth in Banbury, 1878 organist of St Clement's in Bournemouth, 1879 studied piano with Frits Hartvigson, organ with Edward John Hopkins and harmony with Henry Charles Banister at the Normal College for the Blind, 1883-1889 organist of All Saints in Wellingborough, 1890 emigrated to South Africa to become teacher of music at the Collegiate School for Girls and organist of Holy Trinity in Port Elizabeth which posts he held until death, 1895 he was appointed municipal organist gaining an immense popularity in the city, by 1933 he had given 1150 organ recitals at the Feather Market Hall ; eldest of 7 children of inland revenue officer George Ekins Askham (Northamptonshire, Oundle 29.mar.1842-22.aug.1898 Banbury Shutford) and Sarah Tavener (Oundle 1842-1880 Bournemouth) ; 1885 in London he married the blind contralto singer Margaret Jane Reece (Cheshire, Rock Ferry 1859-20.jun.1897 Port Elizabeth)
