jewish musicologist, 1915 his family resided in New York City and 1920 had moved to Philadelphia Pennsylvania, studied at Philadelphia College of Performing Arts, composition with Jaromir Weinberger, Frederick Schleider and William Happich, studied at the New York Institute of Finance and La Salle College of Law New York, 1981 professor of musicology at Pepperdine University Los Angeles, 1985 director of the Choral Society of Southern California ; son of Elias Bacal (Romania 1880- / 1903 USA) and Jennie Abrams (Romania 1883- / 1898 USA) ; brother of composer David Bacal ; he married Rosalyn Naomi Goldwasser (Bronx 1916-11.sep.1991 Sedona)

[his place of birth is also given as New York City, his parents married 1907 and lived in New York City 1908-1916, he was probably born during a short visit to Quebec where large jewish communities resided in Montreal and Quebec City with many members of the Bacal families]
