 cornetist, drum major, bandmaster, studied at the Royal Military School of Music Kneller Hall in Twickenham, 1881-1882 musician with the 75th Regiment and 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders at Malta, 13.sep.1882 he took part in the Egyptian Campaign, 1883 in Aberdeen, Egypt and Malta, 4.mar.1884 discharged as invalid at the rank of lieutenant corporal, decorated with the Khedive's Star, 1890 as bandmaster of the Dover Town Band residing at Ivy Cottage 15 Townwall Street in Dover Kent, 1900 clarionet player in Brighton, 1911 as market gardener residing at 188 Hollingdean Terrace in Brighton, later his profession was newsagent and tobacconist, 14.aug.1918 from Brighton he sent a letter to his son Hubert James prisoner of war in Limburg an der Lahn Germany, 11.oct.1918 the letter was 'returned to sender' because his son was at another camp ; son of wheelwright Charles Thomas Beard (Stoke Gifford 25.mar.1827-4.dec.1865 Bristol Clifton) and Mary Ann Jones (Alveston near Bristol 24.may.1831-25.apr.1883 Thornbury near Alveston) ; 11.aug.1890 in Dover Kent he married master milkman Miriam Sarah Bates (Kent, Ivychurch 21.mar.1865-1941 Brighton)
