amateur organist, choirmaster, because of the childish name Jentje (diminutive of Jan) he exclusively used his initials J G van Balen, Gerrits is short for Gerritsoon (Gerrit's son), 1887-1928 wholesaler in tea and coffee at his home Nieuwendijk 15 in Amsterdam, 1886-1888 organist/choirmaster of Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk (Posthoornkerk) Haarlemmerstraat in Amsterdam, 1901-1906 organist/choirmaster of the Sint Dominicuskerk Spuistraat in Amsterdam, 26.oct.1900 appointed director and 25.sep.1905 elected president of R. K. zangvereeniging 'Arti et Religioni' in Amsterdam, 16.nov.1908 member of the Eere-comite at the Jubelfeest van Paus Pius X, his funeral service took place at the Sint Dominicuskerk and his burial at the R. K. Kerkhof St Barbara ; son of state taxes officer Gerrit Sijbrens van Balen (1813-5.feb.1887 Irnsum) and Alida 'Aaltje' Hoites Lijcklama a Nijeholt (1825-27.feb.1905 Irnsum) ; 23.jan.1879 in Amsterdam he married Theodora Mechtilda Jansen (Amsterdam 4.mar.1854-29.jul.1928 Amsterdam) ; they had 12 children
