ethnomusicologist, born as son of formerly enslaved black parents, 1917 passed the first examination for the BA degree at Fourah Bay College in Freetown but did not obtain the degree because he was unable to travel to London for the final examination, 1921-1924 studied at the Institute of Musical Art in New York City, 1925 worked on his collection of spirituals at the Penn School on St Helena South Carolina, 1926 and 1930 as Liberian citizen he made field research travels in western Africa
