alto/countertenor singer, 19.jun.1722 baptized at Saint Martin in the Fields in Westminster as son of John and Elizabeth Barrow, 1735-1745 chorister under Bernard Gates at the Chapel Royal in London, 1743 became Baccalaureus of Oxford, 1746 alto singer, gentleman and copyist of the Chapel Royal, lay vicar and music copyist of St Peter's at Westminster (Westminster Abbey), 1783-1789 secretary of the Chapel Royal College of Music, he took part in Handel's oratorios on account of his power and steadiness of his high countertenor voice, 17.aug.1789 buried in the north cloister of Westminster Abbey
