pianist, teacher, jewish, 1928 studied on a government grant at Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, studied with Nadia Boulanger and Alfred Cortot in Paris, 1934 graduated from the State Conservatory of Music in Riga Latvia, 1935 professor at the State Academy of Music in Memel Lithuania, 1939 to escape the invading Nazi army he fled to Israel settling in Palestine and taught at the Israel Academy of Music in Tel Aviv, 1953 gave a recital at Wigmore Hall London, 11.may.1954 emigrated to the USA, 1954-1977 professor of piano at Cornell College Mount Vernon Iowa, made numerous European and US tours and after 1961 radio and tv appearances in the USA, 1972-1973 received Iowa Arts Council grants, 1977-1980 taught as retired professor emeritus at Cornell College, 1983 moved to Cedar Rapids ; brother of Dr. Leon Bern ; 1952 in London he married pianist/poet Marianne A Katzenstein (Germany 18.aug.1922- / 2012 living in Cedar Rapids) ; daughter soprano/cantor Jennifer Bern Vogel (Mount Vernon 24.feb.1957-), son singer/songwriter Dan Bern (Mount Vernon 27.jul.1959-)
