pianist, organist, received piano and organ lessons from his father, 1876-1879 studied piano and composition at Moscow Conservatory, 1889-1890 professor of piano and organ in Tiflis, 1908-1914 in Kyiv, 1918 at Moscow Conservatory, while giving concerts as piano and organ virtuoso in Russia and Riga, 1921 because of poor health retired in quiet teaching to Dobele ; son of organist, music teacher Janis Betins (1830-1912)
