singing teacher, originally a tanner, self-taught in music, first American to make music his profession, 1770-1785 founded/directed choral singing schools in Boston and 1774 in Stoughton Massachusetts, 1780-1800 owned a house at 89 Newbury Street Boston, 1795 upon the death of his wife he was left with 6 children under 18, he died in poverty and was buried in an unmarked grave at Boston Common Cemetery ; son of William Billings (Boston 3.jan.1701-1760 Boston) and Elizabeth Clark (Boston Braintree 7.mar.1706-1764 Boston) ; 26.jul.1774 he married singer Lucy Swan (Stoughton 16.sep.1751-21.mar.1795 Boston)
