R&B singer, songwriter, of African descent, 1945 left her home in Portsmouth along with trumpeter Jimmy Brown to sing in bars and clubs, 1946 engaged at the Crystal Caverns in Washington DC, 1948 she had a car accident which damaged her legs and hospitalized her for nine months, 1949-1955 recorded five number one hits for Atlantic Records ; daughter of railroad dockworker Leonard Eldred Weston (Portsmouth 29.jun.1908-28.aug.1953 Portsmouth) and Martha Jane Alston (NC, Warren 22.feb.1910-1983 NY, Hempstead) ; 1947 in Pasquotank NC she married trumpeter James Earl Brown (NC 22.sep.1920-) who was later found to be already married
