Dahms, Walter Willy Hermann (Armando, Gualterio) 9.jun.1887-5.oct.1973 Germany, Berlin - Portugal, Lisbon
violinist, choral conductor, music critic, writer on music, autodidact on violin which he practised as member of an orchestra, 1906-1910 studied piano and composition with Adolf Schultze in Berlin, 1910-1912 choral conductor in Berlin, 1912-1921 music critic for Der Hammer, Buhne und Welt, Kleines Journal, Neue Preussische Kreuz Zeitung, Ostdeutsche Rundschau, Allgemeine Musik Zeitung and many more, his scathing criticism of modern music composers such as Wagner and Richard Strauss with their 'sick music' were one of the reasons that he later had to leave Germany because 1933 he was unable to find employment, 1918 residing at Friedbergstrasse 23 in Berlin-Charlottenburg, 1919-1920 studied with the musicologist Otto Vrieslander in Berlin, 1921 he went to Italy (Florence, Rome, Palermo), 1927 to France (Nice, 1931 Paris), 28.jul.1931 in Paris with the aid of his friend Froylan Turcios, Honduran consul in Paris, he acquired the Honduran nationality taking the name Gualterio Armando, 1929-1933 he was employed as translator of italian operas by Casa Musicale Sonzogno, 1933 unable to find employment in Berlin he went to Spain (Barcelona, Madrid), 18.jun.1933 he 'notable pianista' and his wife 'notabilisima cantante' gave a recital of his Canciones hispanoamericano at Ateneo de Madrid, 1936 settled in Lisbon, 1939 residing at Rua Fabrica das Sedas 21, he published biographies on Schubert (1912), Schumann (1916), Mendelssohn (1919), Bach (1924), Chopin (1924), Paganini (1960), Liszt (1961), Wagner (1962), 1966 funded by the Gulbenkian Foundation Lisbon he published Geschichte Portugals ; son of Wilhelm Carl Friedrich Dahms and Albertine Friederike Wilhelmine Schmocker ; 8.sep.1910 in Charlottenburg he married Agnes Hedwig Klothilde Matulke (Reinsdorf 12.jul.1884-), 1911 the marriage had failed but Matulke did not agree in divorce, he was finally granted a divorce 23.feb.1931 Berlin ; from 1920 he lived with and 6.jun.1931 in Paris he married the soprano Margarethe Ohlmann ; daughter Gilda (1926-)
