born corner Kwikstraat and Lepelstraat in Wanroij, in his early years he often went on foot four miles to Rijkevoort to play the organ, with his brother Bertus he was singer in the male choir Wanroij Liedertafel, studied music in Culemborg, 1873 moved to 's-Gravenhage (Den Haag) where he was music teacher, 1875-1915 organist/choirmaster of the Jezuietenkerk (Theresiakerk) at Westeinde in 's-Gravenhage, 1915 on his 40th anniversary as director of music at the Theresiakerk he was honored by the Pope with the eere-kruis (cross of honor) 'Pro Ecclessia et Pontifice' ; son (eldest of 13 children) of tailor Jacobus Giesen (1808-5.may.1870) and Maria van der Sanden (13.dec.1819-5.dec.1897) ; 19.sep.1880 in 's-Gravenhage he married Theresia Maria Philomena Boelen ('s-Gravenhage 27.aug.1851-15.jan.1921 's-Gravenhage) ; they had five children of which Ignaties Henricus Maria ('s-Gravenhage 1885-) became organ builder
