black jazz pianist, singer, songwriter, his mother had died before he was 8 and he was raised by his grandmother and his father's sister Mattie Granger Covington (Bowling Green 1.mar.1869-22.jan.1948 Bowling Green), 1909 he resided with his sister Ursula (oct.1894-) at State Street in Bowling Green and was employed as porter with Farnsworth & Stout, although he was active as accompanist on piano to many singers in the 1920s, he was songwriter by profession all his life and had hundreds of songs to his credit, 1916-1920 as songwriter residing in Chicago Illinois, 1920 moved with his songwriting partner Frederick G 'Freddie' Johnson (1890-1941) to New York City, 1925 residing at 2347 7th Avenue he formed a songwriting duo Grainger & Ricketts (Rainbow Music Company) with Robert W 'Bob' Ricketts (Ohio, Springfield mar.1884-), 1925-1931 residing at 2 West 130th Street Manhattan, 1935-1940 at 1990 7th Avenue, 1942 at 2 West 120th Street and employed at Minsky-Eltinge Theatre, he died between 3.aug.1951-11.dec.1951 because the copyright of six songs were renewed on his name on 4.apr.1951, two on 27.jul.1951, two on 3.aug.1951 and the copyright of all his songs were transferred to his daughter on 11.dec.1951 with the remark that he had died without leaving a will ; grandson of farmer Leno Granger (1832-b1880 Bowling Green Rich Pond) and Patience 'Patia' Gibbs Granger Coleman (dec.1837-b1930 Bowling Green) who remarried and survived the 16 year younger Joseph C Coleman (mar.1853-21.apr.1916 Bowling Green) ; son of gospel minister James N Granger (Bowling Green may.1868-6.jun.1918 Bowling Green, bur Mount Moriah Cemetery Warren) ; 7.nov.1914 in Chicago he married Alies Kieth (1893-) but was single again in 1920 ; 1924 he married singer/schoolteacher Ethel V Finnie (New Orleans 7.jan.1898-) but after 1929 she lived under her maiden name with her parents again at 4021 Dryades Street in New Orleans ; their daughter Portia L Grainger (New Orleans 1925-) was teacher at Southern University in Baton Rouge 1954
