pianist, organist, violinist, conductor, music dealer and publisher, born as Pieter Albertus van Hagen, studied piano with Leontzi Honauer in Paris, he was for some time active in London England, 1774 moved with his family to the USA settling in Charleston but returned to the Netherlands at the outbreak of the Revolution (c1776) and became klokkenist (carillonneur) and organist of the Groote Kerk in Zutphen, 1789 moved with his wife, daughter and son from Zutphen to New York City, 1789 he advertised that he sold "instruments of all sorts, and taught at six dollars a month (twelve lessons) and a guinea entrance fee, any or all of the following: violin, harpsichord, tenor, violoncello, German flute, hautboy, clarinet, bassoon and singing", October 1789 debuted in New York when he introduced to the public his son Peter Junior, eight years of age, the father played two concertos on the violin, one on the tenor and a solo upon iron nails called 'Violin Harmonika', while the boy rendered a vocal selection and played a concerto on the pianoforte, he gave annual New York subscription concerts and managed 'City Concerts', January 1790 advertized instruments and music for sale at his lodgings, September 1796 the family moved to Boston, where he became conductor of the orchestra at Hay-Market Theatre and organist of Stone Chapel, he opened a Musical Academy at 62 Newbury Street (later Washington Street) and a music store with Warranted Imported Piano Forte Ware House and 1797 started music publishing as P A von Hagen & Co., December 1797 he issued his first 'Musical Magazine', he composed principally for the theatre ; son of composer Peter Albrecht von Hagen (Germany, Hamburg f1740-f1772 ?Netherlands, ?Rotterdam) ; in the Netherlands he married pianist/organist Elizabeth Joanette Catherine van Hagen (Netherlands, ?Amsterdam 1750-1.sep.1809 Boston) ; son composer Peter Albertus van Hagen jr. (Netherlands 1779-10.sep.1837 Boston)
