jewish klezmer clarinetist, bandleader, studied at the Odessa Conservatory of Music, 3.sep.1904 emigrated to the USA New York City where he played in the Great Lafayette Band and in the Buffalo Bill's Wild West shows, 15.oct.1904 he moved to Philadelphia, 1907 he resided at 817 South 5th Street, 1911 at 507 South 5th Street, 22.mar.1912 in Philadelphia he became naturalized American, he played in John Philip Sousa's band, 1917 he was employed at Arch Street Theatre Philadelphia, 1917-1926 led his own Kandel's Orchestra/Kandel's Jewish Orchestra, 1916 formed the Harry Kandel's Famous Inlet Orchestra, 10.nov.1920 he purchased steamship tickets to bring his family, father Mordko Kandel, Soulia Kandel, Bas Szejwe Kandel, Nuchim Kandel, Benzion Broncrtejn, Chaim Mates Broncrtejn and K Tania Broncrtejn to the US, 22.jul.1921 he copyrighted all his compositions for piano, probably because he started music publishing at this date, June 1922 he made a 4 month trip sight seeing and visiting relatives in Poland, England, Germany, Italy, Holland with final destination France, 1922 he was music dealer and owner of Peoples Talking Machine Co. and resided at 502 South 5th Street Philadelphia, 1924-1925 at 513 South Street, 1924 he copyrighted all his music again, now arranged for recordings with orchestra, 1930 he ran a radio store and resided at 510 South 5th Street, 1940 at 5104 Nevada Street, by 1942 his business had expanded as Harry Kandel & Co. electrical appliances at 424 South Street while he resided as merchant and employer at 246 Stoneway Lane in Merion Philadelphia ; son of Mordko Kandel who was born and 1922 still living in Kovel ; c1906 in Philadelphia he married Pearl (Russia, Nanschus 1883-), daughter Lillie (Philadelphia 20.aug.1908-) ; 1907 in Philadelphia a Harry Kandel married Polle Wool ; 1917-1940 he was married to Pauline (Russia 1885-) with daughter Reba (Philadelphia 1911-), son Samuel (Philadelphia 6.may.1913-14.dec.1983 Philadelphia Narberth) and daughter Doris (Philadelphia 5.aug.1921-27.apr.1999 Philadelphia King of Prussia) [Pearl, Polle Wool and Pauline are probably the same person]

[an unknown source gives erroneously born Lemberg (now Lviv) ; on his passport application 27.mar.1922 his age is given as 38 and his birth as Kowel 28.mar.1884 which is incorrect ; on his 1942 WWII registration aged 58 he gave his birth as Kovel 28.oct.1884]
