violinist, studied violin with his brother Jean Joseph (1790-1818) and the amateur Ambroise Delaveux in Liege who also introduced him in Paris and to Willem I king of the Netherlands, 26.mar.1822 debuted at Theatre Royal Liege, after Cherubini refused him admission to the Conservatoire Paris he studied privately, violin with Rodolphe Kreutzer, composition with Pierre Rode and Charles Philippe Lafont, 1829 entered the Conservatoire Paris where he studied violin with Jean Nicolas Auguste Kreutzer, harmony with Pierre Joseph Zimmermann, counterpoint and fugue with Fetis, 24.feb.1842-1.oct.1890 professor of violin at the Conservatoire Paris, 1864 chevalier Legion d'honneur ; he married pianist/composer Louise Aglae Masson ; uncle of violinist/composer Rodolphe Massart (1840-1910)
