harpist, son of tailor and amateur clarinetist John Thomas, 1841 the family moved to London St Michael Wood Street, he studied harp with John Balsir Chatterton, piano with Charles John Read and composition with Charles Lucas and Cipriani Potter at the Royal School of Music London, 1851 residing in Llanelly Wales, 8.oct.1852 and jan.1861 played at the Gewandhaus Leipzig, 1852-1862 toured Europe, 1861 titled 'Pencerdd Gwalia' at the Aberdare eisteddfod, 1871-1901 residing in Newcastle Wales, 1871 appointed harpist to Queen Victoria, on the death of John Balsir Chatterton, 1871-1879 founder and conductor of the Welsh Choral Union in London, 1871 professor of harp at the Royal Academy of Music, 1882 at the Royal College of Music and Guildhall School of Music ; brother of Thomas Aptommas
