violinist, clarinetist, pianist, conductor, studied clarinet with his father, violin with Johannes Bernardus van Bree, piano and composition with Jan Georg Bertelman, 1843 singing teacher at the Zangschool of the Haarlemsche Maatschappij tot bevordering der Toonkunst at the Kruisstraat in Haarlem, 15.jul.1850 he was honored with a gold pocket watch with inscription 'Muziekfeest Haarlem 1850', he was violinist in the orchestra 'Kunst en Vermaak' under Johannes Bernardus van Bree and clarinetist and assistant bandmaster of the Schutterij (civic guard) of his father in Haarlem, he succeeded Johannes Bernardus van Bree as conductor of the orchestra 'Kunst en Vermaak' with which he gave 10 'heerenconcerten' (gentlemen's concerts) and 6 'damesconcerten' (lady's concerts) per season, 1854 'Kunst en Vermaak was dissolved, 1857 he became conductor of the new orchestra and choir 'Per Aspera ad Astra' which was dissolved in 1864, 12.jan.1863 he refused the offer to succeed his father as bandmaster of the Schutterij because his claim that the corps no longer had to give private concerts was rejected by the city council, instead he became director of a Zangschool at the 'Gouden Leeuw' at the Zijlstraat in Haarlem, 1870-1875 founder/conductor of the orchestra 'Euterpe', after 1875 he played in this orchestra as amateur ; son of Jan Willem ; brother of Karel Lodewijk ; in Haarlem he married Johanna Margaretha Funckler ; daughter Maria Elizabeth (Haarlem 20.mar.1845-3.may.1913 Haarlem)
